Carbon filters, sediment filters, softeners and UV all do nothing to it, and boiling makes it worse by concentrating what is already there. Nitrate is common in agricultural areas and shallow wells, and it is invisible and tasteless, so testing is the only way to find it.
Where nitrate comes from and why it matters
Nitrate reaches groundwater from fertilizer, manure, and failing septic systems, and it is highest in shallow wells, in wells near cropland or livestock, and after wet seasons. It is the classic reason infants under six months and pregnant women are told to use an alternative supply while a well is being treated. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark.
Reverse osmosis at the drinking tap
For most households a point-of-use reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink is the practical answer. The membrane rejects nitrate along with the other dissolved ions, the unit is compact, and the treated water covers drinking, cooking and infant formula, which is where the exposure that matters occurs. Feed pressure has to be adequate, so wells with low pressure need a booster pump, and the pre-filters have to be changed on schedule or the membrane fails early.
Anion exchange for whole-house treatment
Where whole-house removal is genuinely needed, a nitrate-selective anion exchange resin does the job, working like a softener in reverse by swapping nitrate for chloride and regenerating with salt. Two cautions apply. Standard anion resin can dump accumulated nitrate in a slug when it is exhausted, which is why nitrate-selective resin is specified. Sulfate competes for capacity, so a sulfate-heavy supply exhausts the bed faster than the raw nitrate figure suggests.
Distillation, and what does not work
A countertop distiller boils water and condenses the steam, leaving nitrate behind with everything else dissolved. It is slow and it needs no plumbing, which suits a renter or a temporary problem. What does not work: boiling in a pan, which concentrates nitrate, carbon of any kind, sediment filters, softeners and UV. Test before and after whatever you install, because nitrate gives no taste or smell to tell you it is gone. Does boiling water remove nitrates?
No, it makes them worse. Water leaves as steam and the nitrate stays behind, so the remaining water is more concentrated than when you started.
Will a water softener remove nitrate?
