Calcium in water is not a contaminant. It is one of the two minerals that define hardness, the other being magnesium, and it is what leaves scale on the kettle element and reacts with soap. Removing it is a straightforward decision once you know which technologies actually take it out and which only change how it behaves.
How much you have, in the units that matter
The USGS describes hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, classifying water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Much of the water treatment trade reports the same thing in grains per gallon, whose figures are far smaller, so check the unit before comparing anything. In the soft and moderately hard bands most households do nothing at all and are perfectly comfortable.
Ion exchange, the whole house answer
A softener holds resin beads carrying sodium, and as water passes the calcium and magnesium are taken up and sodium is released in their place. Because it treats the water entering the building, every tap, shower, appliance and heating element benefits: soap lathers, scale stops forming and existing deposits gradually clear. It needs salt, a drain connection with an air gap and a power supply, and it adds sodium in exchange, which matters to a small number of households and is usually handled by leaving one tap unsoftened.
Membranes, at one tap
Reverse osmosis rejects calcium along with most other dissolved material, and nanofiltration rejects it specifically while letting smaller salts through, which is why nanofiltration is sometimes called membrane softening. Both remove it genuinely rather than managing it. The limitation at household scale is scope and cost: reverse osmosis is fitted at one tap for drinking and cooking, so the shower, the washing machine and the water heater are untouched by it.
What does not remove it
Salt free conditioners leave calcium in the water and reduce how readily scale sticks to surfaces, which protects pipework and heating elements without changing lather, laundry or a hardness test. Carbon filters, sediment cartridges and ultraviolet do nothing to it at all. Boiling drops some out as scale in the kettle and concentrates the rest. If the goal is the full softened water experience, ion exchange is the technology; if it is scale protection with no salt or drain, conditioning is a fair trade.
