How to remove tannins from water without staining everything

Tannins are dissolved organic compounds leached from decaying vegetation, peat and leaf litter, and they arrive in well water as a yellow to tea brown tint that survives standing, settling and ordinary filtration. They are not a health hazard at the levels usually found, but they stain laundry and fixtures, taste faintly of earth, and are stubborn to remove.

Confirming it is tannins first

Colored water has several possible causes and they need different treatment, so the test is worth doing before anything is bought. Fill a clear glass and let it stand. Water that clears from the bottom up was carrying suspended particles. Water that clears from the top down was carrying gas. Water that stays uniformly colored for hours is carrying something dissolved, which is either tannins or dissolved iron. Iron typically reads more orange and leaves a rusty deposit; tannins read yellow to brown and stain fabric without a deposit. A laboratory test settles it.

Anion exchange, the main treatment

The standard approach is a tannin removal resin, an anion exchange bed that binds the negatively charged organic molecules and is regenerated with salt in much the same way a softener is. It works well and handles a good load. It has two requirements people miss: it must be protected from iron, which fouls it quickly, and it is normally installed after a softener rather than before, so the softener handles hardness and the tannin resin is not asked to do both. Regeneration frequency is set by the tannin load rather than by water use.

The other options and their limits

Activated carbon removes some tannins and is cheap, but the capacity is small relative to the load and beds exhaust fast on genuinely colored water, so it suits light discoloration rather than a real tannin problem. Oxidation with chlorine followed by filtration breaks the molecules down and is effective, but it needs contact time and a carbon stage afterwards to remove the chlorine. Reverse osmosis removes tannins thoroughly but only at a single tap, which does nothing about the stained laundry that usually prompts the enquiry.

Design the train, not the box

Tannin water rarely arrives alone. Wells with organic color often carry iron, low pH and sometimes bacteria, and each of those affects both the choice of media and the order of the stages. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody has tested any of this on your behalf.
