Copper pipe corrosion shows up as blue-green staining in sinks and tubs, a metallic taste, or pinhole leaks that appear one after another in the same run. The cause is nearly always the water itself: aggressive low-pH water, high dissolved oxygen, high velocity, or leftover flux. Replacing the pipe without changing the chemistry buys you a few years, not a fix.
Reading the symptoms
Blue-green stains on porcelain and on the outside of joints mean copper is going into solution and coming back out. A metallic taste that is strongest first thing in the morning points to overnight standing time in copper. Pinhole leaks that cluster on the same length of pipe, often on hot lines or immediately after a fitting, point to something mechanical layered on top of the chemistry: turbulence at a sharp elbow, a burr left in the pipe, or velocity from an oversized pump. Green crust on the outside of a joint without a leak inside is usually an old flux residue rather than a failing pipe. Photograph and date what you find, because the pattern over time is what tells a plumber where to look.
The chemistry behind it
Copper corrodes fastest in water that is acidic and low in dissolved minerals. That is common on private wells drawing from granite or sandy aquifers and in some surface-fed supplies. The USGS classifies water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate, and very soft, acidic water is the classic profile behind pinhole leaks, because there is nothing in it to lay down a protective scale film on the pipe wall. High dissolved oxygen and high temperature both accelerate the process, which is why hot water lines usually go first. Get a lab panel with pH, alkalinity, hardness and copper on it before deciding anything; the numbers point straight at the fix.
What actually stops it
For acidic well water, an acid neutralizer is the standard treatment: a backwashing tank of calcite, sometimes blended with a magnesium medium, that raises pH by dissolving slowly into the water. It adds hardness as it works, which is a known side effect and a reason it is often paired with a softener. For a house where velocity is the problem, the fix is plumbing rather than treatment: correcting undersized pipe, easing sharp turns, or dialing back a pump. On a municipal supply, corrosion control is the utility's job and a copper result at your tap that is out of line is worth reporting, since it may indicate the water reaching your neighborhood has changed.
Confirming with the right evidence
Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder for them, so a municipal customer can see what the utility measures before spending anything. Well owners have no such report and need a lab panel. In both cases the decisive test is a first-draw sample from your own tap after water has stood overnight, compared with a flushed sample from the same tap, because the difference between them isolates what your own plumbing is contributing.
