What does a carbon filter remove from water?

A carbon filter removes what sticks to carbon: chlorine, the byproducts chlorine forms, many volatile organic compounds, and nearly all of the tastes and smells that travel with them. It does very little to dissolved minerals and salts, which pass through untouched. That single distinction, things that adsorb against things that stay dissolved, answers almost every carbon filter question you can ask.

How carbon catches anything at all

Activated carbon is riddled with pores, giving a small volume of media an enormous internal surface. Certain molecules stick to that surface as water passes, a process called adsorption, and they stay stuck until the surface is full. Two things decide whether it works in your house: how much carbon the water meets, and how long it stays in contact with it. A thin cartridge running at full household flow gives molecules very little time to find a pore, which is why whole-house units are built around a large media tank rather than a small housing.

What carbon removes well

Free chlorine is the headline, and carbon strips it reliably, which is why a carbon stage sits in front of almost every drinking water system. Along with the chlorine goes the swimming pool smell, the flat chemical taste and much of the disinfection byproduct load that forms when chlorine meets organic matter. Carbon also grips many volatile organic compounds, solvents and pesticide residues. Catalytic carbon, a different grade, is the version used when the utility disinfects with chloramine instead, because ordinary carbon struggles with that bond.

What carbon does not remove

Hardness passes straight through, so a carbon filter will not stop scale and will not soften anything. Nitrate, fluoride, sodium and most dissolved salts are unaffected. Dissolved iron and manganese are not a carbon job either: they need oxidation and a backwashing media bed. A plain carbon block is not a disinfection device, so bacteria are not its department. For contaminants that stay in solution, the tool is reverse osmosis, ion exchange or a specific adsorptive media, not more carbon.

Certification, and knowing when it is spent

A carbon filter gives no warning when its surface is full. Taste usually returns first, but taste is a poor gauge for anything odorless, so the honest approach is to follow the manufacturer's rated capacity and change on schedule rather than on symptoms. Where a specific contaminant matters, look for a product certified for that exact reduction claim rather than a general promise, and pair the choice with a current test or your utility report so you know which claims are worth paying for. Does a carbon filter remove bacteria?

No. A standard carbon filter is not a disinfection device. Bacteria are handled by ultraviolet treatment, chlorination or a filter specifically certified as a microbiological barrier.

Will carbon soften hard water?

It will not. Calcium and magnesium stay dissolved and pass through carbon untouched, so scale keeps forming. Softening needs ion exchange resin or a scale conditioning media.

What is the difference between a carbon block and granular carbon?

A block is compressed into a solid wall, so it filters particles as well as adsorbing and gives longer contact at low flow. Granular carbon flows more freely and suits high flow whole-house tanks.

Does carbon remove chloramine?

Ordinary carbon does so poorly. Catalytic carbon is the grade made for chloramine, and it needs generous contact time, which usually means a tank rather than a small cartridge.
