A micron water filter rating describes the size of particle a filter is designed to stop, measured in millionths of a meter. It is a statement about mechanical straining and nothing else, which is why a very fine rating tells you nothing about whether the filter will remove chlorine, hardness, nitrates or bacteria from the water passing through it.
Nominal and absolute are not the same claim
A nominal rating means the filter captures most particles of that size, and the proportion varies by maker and is often not stated. An absolute rating means it captures very nearly all of them and is a much stronger claim. Two cartridges printed with the same number can perform very differently for this reason alone. When a rating matters, look for the word absolute, and be suspicious of a fine nominal number offered without qualification.
Finer is not automatically better
Every reduction in micron rating increases resistance and shortens the interval before the cartridge plugs. Fitting a fine cartridge as a house's only filter on water carrying silt produces frequent changes and pressure complaints. The usual arrangement is a coarse stage first to do the bulk work, then a finer stage to polish. Choose the rating by what you are protecting downstream, not by the smallest number on the shelf.
What a micron rating cannot promise
Dissolved contaminants have no particle size, so no micron rating addresses them: hardness, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, sodium and dissolved iron all pass through a filter of any rating. Bacteria are a special case. A very fine absolute rating is sometimes claimed to reduce cysts, but reducing is not disinfecting, and only UV, chemical disinfection or a certified purifier makes microbiologically unsafe water safe.
If you are on a private well
Then this matters more, because nobody else is checking. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. A micron rating does nothing about any of those. Test first, then choose media for what the test found, and use micron ratings only to size the sediment stages. What micron rating is best for drinking water?
For taste, the carbon matters more than the number. Five micron or finer is common at the sink, but the rating alone removes nothing dissolved.
Does a 1 micron filter remove bacteria?
It may reduce larger cysts, but reduction is not disinfection. Making unsafe water safe needs UV, chemical disinfection or a certified purifier.
What is the difference between nominal and absolute ratings?
Nominal means most particles of that size are caught; absolute means very nearly all are. Absolute is the stronger and more consistent claim.
