There is no meaningful reverse osmosis shower head, and it is worth understanding why before buying something marketed as one. Reverse osmosis produces water slowly, at a trickle, and sends a substantial part of the feed to drain. A shower needs the opposite: a lot of water, right now, at full pressure. The two requirements are simply incompatible in a device that hangs on an arm.
Why the physics does not fit a shower
A reverse osmosis membrane works by forcing water through under pressure against osmotic pressure, and the permeate emerges far slower than a fixture uses water. That is why every household reverse osmosis unit fills a storage tank over hours and serves one small faucet. A shower draws more water in a few minutes than such a unit makes in a day, and the rejected concentrate has to go somewhere, which means a drain connection at the shower arm. What is actually sold under that name
Products advertised as reverse osmosis or multistage shower heads are almost always cartridge filters using KDF media, calcium sulfite, activated carbon and sometimes ceramic beads. Those are real technologies with a real effect on chlorine and chloramine, which is the main shower complaint. They are not membranes and they do not reject dissolved solids. The honest way to read the marketing is that the word is being used loosely for filtration, and the performance data will show chlorine reduction rather than dissolved solids rejection.
What a shower filter can and cannot do
KDF and calcium sulfite media reduce free chlorine well, which addresses the dry skin, itching and smell many people notice, and carbon helps with taste and odor carried into the steam. They are much less effective on chloramine, which needs longer contact time than a shower head allows. They do nothing for hardness, so scale on the door and the stiff feeling in your hair stay exactly as they are, and their capacity is short because a shower moves a lot of water quickly.
The alternatives that genuinely work
For chlorine and taste throughout the house, a whole house carbon or catalytic carbon filter treats every fixture with proper contact time and lasts far longer than a shower cartridge.
