A DIY water filter system is entirely realistic if what you mean is assembling standard housings, brackets and fittings yourself instead of paying for a preassembled skid. It is not realistic if you mean improvising media in a bucket and calling the result drinkable. The difference is whether every stage is a rated component doing a job you can verify.
The sensible version: assembling rated parts
Manufactured filter housings, cartridges, brackets, valves and gauges are sold individually, and building a treatment train from them is ordinary plumbing rather than invention. A typical home built setup is a bracket carrying two or three large diameter housings, isolation valves either side, a bypass loop, pressure gauges before and after, and unions so any housing can be removed without cutting pipe. Everything in that list is a rated part used as intended, so the performance is whatever the cartridges are certified to deliver. The saving over a packaged system is real, and the skill needed is confidence with your pipe material rather than any knowledge of water chemistry.
Rules that keep a home built system legitimate
Use components rated for potable water and for your line pressure, since a housing intended for irrigation can fail dangerously on a household main. Respect direction of flow arrows and put the coarse sediment stage first so it protects everything behind it. Support the housings on a bracket rather than hanging them from the pipe, because a full large diameter sump is heavy. Check whether local plumbing code requires a permit or a backflow device for the connection you are making, particularly where a drain line is involved for a backwashing unit. Pressure test everything before you close the wall or leave it unattended, and check again a day later once the joints have seen a full cycle.
What DIY cannot give you
Two things are outside a home build. The first is certified contaminant reduction, which is a laboratory result for a specific cartridge under a specific test protocol, not a property of your assembly, so any removal claim you rely on has to come from a rated cartridge rather than from media you scooped into a housing. The second is disinfection you can trust. Bacteria are invisible, a gravity bucket of sand and charcoal removes turbidity and some taste while doing nothing reliable about them, and an ultraviolet lamp has to be sized and installed so that every drop receives the correct dose. Neither of those can be judged by looking at the water.
Test first, because nobody else is testing
The design should follow a laboratory result. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 23 million households, rely on them, and cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Questions people ask about diy water filter system
Can I make drinking water safe with a homemade sand and charcoal filter?
No. That arrangement improves clarity and some taste but gives no reliable removal of bacteria, nitrate or metals, none of which can be seen. Safety claims require rated components and a test result.
Is a self assembled housing system as good as a packaged one?
It can be, since the performance comes from the cartridges rather than the frame. What you give up is a single warranty, matched sizing and someone else's responsibility if it leaks.
Do I need a permit to install my own filter?
It depends on local code and on what you are connecting. Cutting into the main line or adding a drain connection for a backwashing unit is more likely to be regulated than a simple cartridge housing.
