Water well testing: what to test for, when to test, and how to do it properly

Water well testing is the owner's job and nobody else's: private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no agency tests your water for you. Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Why the responsibility sits with you

City water systems are regulated, monitored and required to report. A private well has none of that machinery behind it: the EPA is explicit that private wells fall outside the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the sampling, the lab work and the decision to treat all belong to the household. The USGS finding that roughly one in five sampled wells exceeded a health benchmark is the practical argument for testing on a schedule rather than waiting for a taste or a smell, because several of the contaminants that matter most, bacteria and nitrate among them, have neither.

What to test for, and on what schedule

The baseline is an annual test for coliform bacteria and nitrate, the two indicators most likely to change year to year and most tied to health. Beyond that, test by situation: metals such as arsenic and lead, plus pH, hardness, iron and manganese, at least once so you know your well's baseline chemistry; nitrate more attentively if you are near farmland or have infants in the house; and a fresh bacteria test after any flood, any work on the well or pump, or any change in taste, odor or color. Kits, labs and how to sample so the answer means something

Home test strips are screening tools: fine for tracking hardness or pH, not a basis for a treatment purchase. A certified lab, often your state or county health department's, gives you numbers a decision can rest on. How often should a private well be tested?

Test annually for coliform bacteria and nitrate as the minimum, and retest immediately after flooding, well or pump work, or any change in taste, smell or appearance. Broader chemistry panels, covering metals, pH and minerals, can run less often once you know the well's baseline.

My well water tastes fine. Do I still need to test it?

What should I do if my well test fails?

First retest to confirm, since a single bacteria hit can be a sampling artifact.
