Also test after shock chlorination, twice: once to confirm the chlorine has cleared and again some weeks later to confirm the bacteria have not returned, because a single clean sample straight after disinfection proves only that the chlorine worked that day.

Use bottles from the laboratory, not your own containers. Remove the aerator, sanitize the spout for a bacteria sample, run the tap long enough to draw water from the well rather than from the pressure tank, and fill without rinsing bottles that contain preservative. Compare against the health-based benchmark where one exists and against the aesthetic recommendation where the parameter is a nuisance rather than a hazard.
