A well water testing kit is only as good as the panel it runs. Nobody regulates a private well, so the owner picks the list of analytes, and the common mistake is buying a general-purpose kit that reads hardness and pH while ignoring the bacteria and nitrate results that decide whether the water is safe to drink at all.
Why the well owner is the only line of defense
The EPA is explicit that private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, depend on one. It also cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells that found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Nothing about a clear, good-tasting glass distinguishes those wells from the rest. That is the whole argument for testing on a schedule rather than testing when something looks wrong.
The panel that belongs on every well
Total coliform and E. coli are the baseline, because they indicate a path for surface contamination into the well. Nitrate belongs on every panel in agricultural and septic country. Then the household nuisance set that decides your equipment: hardness, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids, and hydrogen sulfide if there is a rotten-egg smell. Beyond that the panel is geological: arsenic, uranium, radon, fluoride and lead are region-specific, and your state or county health department usually publishes which of them are known problems in your aquifer. Strip kit, mail-in kit, or certified laboratory
Strips and drop tests handle hardness, iron and pH well enough to size equipment, and they are worth keeping in the utility room for spot checks. Bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and metals need a laboratory. A mail-in kit is a laboratory test with a courier attached, and it is a good middle route provided you follow the sampling instructions exactly. Where a result has to satisfy someone else, a mortgage lender, a real estate transaction, a health department, or a well permit, only a state-certified laboratory result will be accepted, so check the certification before you pay.
Sampling discipline, because most bad results are sampling errors
For bacteria, use the sterile bottle unopened until the moment of sampling, do not rinse it, do not touch the inside of the cap, flame or sanitize the tap, run the water to clear the line, and ship cold and same-day inside the stated holding time. For metals, decide whether you want a first-draw sample showing your plumbing or a flushed sample showing the aquifer, and record which you took. Sample ahead of any treatment equipment if you want to know what the well is delivering, and after it as well if you want to know whether the equipment works.
Turning the result into an equipment decision
A well panel usually points at a treatment train rather than a single box. Sediment ahead of everything, then iron and manganese removal if the levels warrant it, then softening, then disinfection if bacteria are present, then point-of-use polishing for drinking. The order is not optional: oxidized iron ruins softener resin, and turbid water blocks ultraviolet light. Take the numbers to a vendor rather than a symptom description, and hold onto the report, because the retest after commissioning is the only proof the money did what it was supposed to.

Can a strip kit test for bacteria in well water?
