Sending a sample to a well water testing lab

A well water testing lab gives you the one thing a home kit cannot: a defensible number produced by a certified method with a known detection limit. Nobody is testing a private well for you, so the lab report is the only evidence you will ever have, and the quality of that report depends almost entirely on how you take the sample.

Why a lab, and why it falls to you

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 43 million people in over 23 million households, depends on one. There is no utility sampling your water and no annual report arriving in the mail. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark, which is the case for testing on a schedule rather than after a scare.

Choosing a lab and a panel

Start with your state certification list, since states publish the labs accredited to run drinking water methods, and many state or university extension labs run homeowner panels at sensible prices. Then choose the panel rather than accepting the cheapest one. A baseline for a well normally covers total coliform and E. coli, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids. Add arsenic, uranium, radon or fluoride if your region is known for them, and add lead if the plumbing or the pump components warrant it. The lab will tell you what is common locally if you ask.

Taking a sample that means something

Use only the bottles the lab supplies, because some contain preservative and the bacteria bottle is sterile. Do not rinse them. For bacteria, sample from a clean tap with the aerator removed, run the water to clear the line, avoid disinfecting the spout in a way the lab has not asked for, and fill without touching the bottle rim or cap interior. Then respect the hold time: bacteriological samples are usually only valid for a day or so, must travel cold, and should never be posted on a Friday. Most invalid results are a shipping problem, not a water problem.

Reading the report before you buy anything

The report will list each analyte, a result, a detection limit and often a comparison benchmark. Non detect means below the detection limit, not zero. A result near a benchmark deserves a repeat sample before you commit to equipment, because single samples vary with season, rainfall and how long the pump has been idle. Take the report to whoever is quoting you and ask which line item each proposed stage addresses. How often should a private well be tested at a lab?

At least annually for bacteria and nitrate, and again after any flooding, well work, pump replacement or a noticeable change in taste, smell or appearance of the water.

Can I use my own bottle for a water sample?

No. Labs supply specific bottles, some containing preservative and the bacteria bottle sterile. Using your own container or rinsing the supplied one invalidates the result.

Why did my sample get rejected?

Usually a hold time or temperature problem: bacteria samples are valid for a very short window and must arrive cold, so shipping delays and weekend posting are the most common causes.

What does non detect mean on a lab report?

It means the analyte was below the method detection limit, not that it is absent. The detection limit is printed alongside the result and is what the number should be read against.
