There are three practical ways to filter the water coming out of a kitchen faucet: mount a filter on the spout, sit a unit on the counter and divert water to it, or plumb a system under the sink. They differ in flow rate, cartridge size and what they can be certified to reduce, and the right choice usually comes down to your faucet, your cabinet space and what your water test showed.
On the spout: smallest, simplest, most restricted
A spout mounted unit replaces the aerator and uses a lever to divert water through a compact carbon cartridge. It installs in minutes with no tools and suits renters, but the cartridge is small so flow on the filtered setting is slow and capacity is limited. The bigger constraint is fit: pull-down sprayer faucets and recessed or non standard aerators simply do not accept them. On the counter: bigger cartridge, no plumbing
A countertop unit sits beside the sink and connects to the faucet with a diverter, so it can carry a much larger cartridge than anything hanging off the spout. That means longer contact time, better capacity and often a broader set of certified reduction claims, all without cutting into any pipework. The cost is worktop space and a hose crossing the sink area. Countertop reverse osmosis units also exist and need no drain connection, collecting concentrate in a container instead.
Under the sink: the capable option
An under sink system plumbs into the cold supply and either feeds the existing faucet or, more usually, a small dedicated tap drilled into the sink or worktop. Full sized cartridges and full flow are available, and this is the only format that accommodates reverse osmosis with a storage tank and drain connection. It asks more of the installation: a cold feed tee with its own shutoff, cabinet room for cartridge changes, and, for reverse osmosis, a drain saddle that satisfies your local plumbing code.
What a faucet system will never do
It treats one fixture, so hardness continues to scale the water heater, staining continues in the tub, and the shower still smells of chlorine. It does not protect appliances, and it does nothing about water sitting in the pipes upstream of it. If the problem is house wide, the fix is at the main line. Choose on the certified claim, not the format
Whichever format you pick, the thing that decides whether it helps is the performance data sheet: what contaminants the cartridge is certified to reduce, to what standard, and up to how many gallons. A large under sink system with a plain taste and odor cartridge does less for lead than a small certified spout mount. Match the claim list against your own water test or utility report, then pick the format that fits your faucet and cabinet.
