Sink water filtration: choosing an under sink system

Sink water filtration treats only the water you drink and cook with, which is why it can use finer media than a whole house unit could ever tolerate. The choice comes down to three shapes: an inline carbon cartridge, a multi stage cartridge system, or reverse osmosis, and each demands different space under the cabinet.

Start with what is actually in the water

The right system depends on the contaminant, and guessing is expensive. On a public supply, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for it, so you can read what the water contained when it left the plant. On a well, you need your own lab test, because nothing is reported to you. Carbon handles chlorine, taste, odor and many organics. Reverse osmosis is the broad answer for dissolved solids, nitrate, fluoride and metals. Specialist cartridges exist for lead and for PFAS. Matching media to the actual problem is the whole job.

Inline cartridge, multi stage, or reverse osmosis

An inline carbon cartridge splices into the cold supply and feeds either the existing faucet or a small dedicated tap. It is compact, cheap to run and adequate where the complaint is taste and chlorine. A multi stage system puts sediment, carbon block and often a specialty cartridge in series in mounted housings, holding pressure and flow while covering more contaminants. Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane, stores the product in a small pressure tank and sends a share of the feed water to drain, so it needs a drain connection and the most cabinet space of the three.

What the installation actually involves

All three tap the cold supply at the angle stop under the sink, usually with a feed adapter that lets you keep the existing shutoff. Multi stage and reverse osmosis systems mount on the cabinet wall, and you must leave clearance below the housings to unscrew the sumps and swap cartridges. A dedicated faucet needs a hole in the sink deck or countertop, and many sinks have a spare hole under a sprayer or soap dispenser you can borrow. Reverse osmosis adds a drain saddle or a fitting on the waste tee, which must be above the trap so nothing siphons back.

Flow, waste and living with it

A cartridge system delivers full pressure at the tap. A reverse osmosis system delivers slowly from a stored tank, so filling a large pot takes patience, and it sends some feed water to drain as it works. That trade buys a much broader removal range. Cartridge life is set by volume and by how dirty the incoming water is, not by the calendar alone, and a sediment prefilter is what keeps the expensive stages from clogging early. How it compares to whole house treatment

Sink filtration is the right answer when the concern is drinking and cooking water. It does nothing for scale in the water heater, staining in the tub, or chlorine in the shower, because it treats one fixture. Whole house treatment does the opposite: it protects plumbing and appliances but cannot economically use the fine membranes that a single tap can. Most well households end up with both, with a whole house sediment and iron train protecting the building and a point of use system polishing the kitchen water for drinking.

Questions people ask about sink water filtration

Does under sink filtration need its own faucet?

Reverse osmosis normally does, because the product water is stored and delivered separately. A simple carbon cartridge can feed the existing cold tap instead.

Will an under sink filter also feed my refrigerator?

It can, with a tee off the treated line, though a reverse osmosis system may fill the ice maker slowly. Check whether your fridge still needs its own internal cartridge fitted.

How often do under sink cartridges need changing?

By volume treated and by how loaded the incoming water is, following the manufacturer's rating. Falling flow or returning taste means you are already overdue.

Can I install a sink filtration system myself?

Most cartridge systems are a straightforward do it yourself job with basic tools. Reverse osmosis is harder because of the drain connection and the faucet hole in the sink deck.
