A kitchen sink water filtration system treats the water at one tap rather than the whole house, which makes it the cheapest way to fix the water you drink and cook with. The choice comes down to what you need removed, how much cabinet space you have, and whether you are willing to drill the sink for a second faucet. Get the first question right and the rest is straightforward plumbing.

The three formats and who each suits

An under-sink system hides in the cabinet and feeds a small dedicated faucet on the deck, giving the best capacity and the least clutter at the cost of a drilled hole and a plumbing connection. A countertop unit sits beside the sink and either connects to the faucet with a diverter or is filled by hand, which suits renters and anyone who cannot drill. A faucet-mounted filter screws onto the aerator thread and switches between filtered and unfiltered flow, which is the cheapest entry but has the least media and the shortest cartridge life. Kitchens with a pull-out or wall-mounted faucet often cannot take the mounted type at all.

Carbon block or reverse osmosis

Under the sink the real decision is between a carbon block system and a reverse osmosis system. Carbon block treats chlorine, taste, odor and a range of organic compounds, runs at full faucet flow, wastes nothing and takes up little room. Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane that also rejects dissolved salts, nitrate, fluoride and many metals, but it needs a storage tank, a drain connection and adequate line pressure, and it produces a reject stream. If your complaint is that the water tastes of chlorine, carbon is enough. If a laboratory result names a dissolved contaminant, the membrane is usually what you need.

Start from what is actually in your water

Buying by symptom leads people to expensive systems aimed at the wrong thing. If you are on a municipal supply you already have a document that lists what your utility measured: the EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder to locate yours. Cabinet space, flow and living with it

Measure before you buy. An under-sink carbon system needs room for the housing plus the length of the cartridge to drop out when you change it, which is the dimension people forget. A reverse osmosis system needs the manifold, the tank and a path to the drain saddle, and the tank can often be laid on its side or moved to an adjacent cabinet if space is tight. Check the sink deck for a spare hole before planning to drill, because a sprayer or soap dispenser hole is a free entry point. Then plan for the cartridge changes: a system you cannot reach is a system that goes unserviced.
