Faucet mounted water filtration: how far it actually goes

Faucet mounted water filtration puts a small cartridge on the end of the tap, with a diverter lever selecting filtered or unfiltered flow. Nothing is plumbed, nothing is cut, and it is installed in minutes, which makes it the obvious starting point for renters and for anyone unwilling to open a cabinet. Its limits are set by how little media fits in the housing.

What it treats well

Carbon does the work, and the duties it does well are chlorine taste and odor, which are the reasons most people buy. Better cartridges carry certifications extending to lead, cysts, certain volatile organic compounds and some pesticides, and where those certifications are specific and named they are meaningful. What they never cover is dissolved minerals: hardness, and therefore scale in the kettle and spots on the glassware, is untouched, as are nitrate, fluoride, arsenic and total dissolved solids, all of which need a membrane.

The capacity ceiling

The housing holds a few ounces of carbon, and both the contact time and the total volume it can treat follow directly from that. Cartridge life is short compared with an under sink system, and the shortfall is worse the harder the household works it. Because the capacity is small, exhaustion arrives quickly and silently: the water still looks and often still tastes acceptable for a while after the cartridge stops performing. Change on the stated volume and not on when the taste returns.

Fit, flow and the practical annoyances

The unit needs a removable aerator with a standard thread, which rules out pull out and pull down spray taps and any tap with a concealed or cache aerator. Filtered flow is slower than the tap's own, so filling a pot takes noticeably longer. The whole assembly adds weight and length to the spout, which can foul a shallow sink or a small basin. And hot water must never be run through the filtered path, since heat damages carbon media and can release what it has already captured.

When to move up

Two things move households off this format. Cost, because cartridge spend overtakes an under sink system within a couple of years at any real volume, while giving less capacity and slower flow. And capability, because a complaint that needs reverse osmosis cannot be answered by carbon in any packaging. If the water test names nitrate, arsenic or dissolved solids, or if the household drinks and cooks with filtered water daily, plan for an under sink unit.
