String wound cartridges are made by winding yarn in a controlled pattern around a central core, and the winding is only half the specification. The material the yarn is made from is the other half, and it is what determines the temperature, the chemistry and the application a given cartridge can be used in.

Why the winding filters well

The yarn is laid so the passages are wider at the outside and progressively tighter towards the core, so the whole thickness does filtration work rather than just the outer face. Large particles are caught in the outer windings and finer ones penetrate further before being trapped. That depth structure gives high dirt holding capacity before pressure drop climbs, which is why these suit water carrying a heavy and varied sediment load at a low cost per cartridge.

The materials and what they allow

Polypropylene is the general purpose choice, inexpensive and suitable for cold water and a wide chemical range. Cotton is used where a natural fiber is wanted and tolerates some conditions polypropylene does not. Glass fiber and other specialist windings handle higher temperatures and more aggressive chemistry than plastic can, which is where string wound cartridges are still specified in industrial settings that pleated and melt blown elements cannot serve.

The drawback that decides placement

String wound cartridges can shed fibers as they age, and the shed material travels downstream. On irrigation or an outdoor duty that is inconsequential. That is why melt blown or pleated elements are preferred in drinking water pre filtration despite performing similarly on paper.

Match diameter as carefully as length, since a slim cartridge in a big diameter housing lets water bypass entirely and filters nothing.
