That construction makes them depth filters: particles are caught throughout the thickness of the winding rather than on a face. They hold a lot of dirt, they cost little, and they are the wrong choice for some water.

How the winding does the filtering

The yarn is wound in a diamond pattern with the passages between strands getting progressively narrower toward the core, so water entering at the outside meets a coarse structure first and a fine one last. Large particles are stopped in the outer layers, smaller ones work in further before being trapped, and the whole thickness of the cartridge holds dirt rather than just its surface. That is what depth filtration means, and it is why these cartridges keep working after a surface filter of the same rating would have blinded off. It also means the rating is nominal: they capture most particles at the stated size rather than every one.

Where they beat a pleated cartridge

Pleated cartridges fold a media sheet to pack a large surface area into the housing, and they filter at that surface. They are better where the load is light, where the rating needs to be consistent and where the owner wants to rinse and reuse the element. String wound cartridges take over when the water is genuinely dirty: a heavy sand and silt load, well water after pump work, or a supply that blinds pleated elements within days. The depth structure absorbs that load, and because the cartridges are cheap, replacing them frequently is not painful. They also handle slightly higher temperatures than some pleated elements, which suits certain appliance feeds.

The limitations to plan around

Two behaviors define these cartridges. They cannot be cleaned, because the trapped material is inside the winding rather than on a face, so rinsing achieves nothing and they are consumables by design. And under high pressure drop a heavily loaded winding can unload, releasing captured material downstream, so running one far past its useful life is worse than changing it early. Choose the yarn material to suit the water: polypropylene is the standard and is chemically resistant, while cotton wound cartridges suit certain applications but are organic material that can support growth if left wet and idle for long periods.

Where iron changes the calculation

String wound cartridges are often reached for on well water with iron staining, and the distinction matters. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls softener resin. A sediment cartridge only catches iron that has already oxidized into particles, which is why water that runs clear and turns orange in the bucket needs oxidation and a backwashing filter rather than a cartridge.
