The process behind the phrase
Osmosis is water moving naturally across a membrane from the less concentrated side to the more concentrated side. The differences that matter are maintenance and verification. A bottler runs continuous quality control; a homeowner has to change cartridges on schedule and occasionally check the product water with a dissolved solids meter to know the membrane is still performing.
Point of use or whole house
Most reverse osmosis in homes treats one tap, because production is slow and the water is wanted for drinking and cooking rather than for laundry and toilets. Whole house RO exists and is used where the source water is genuinely unusable, such as high dissolved solids or brackish groundwater, but it needs storage, repressurization and considerably more pretreatment to keep the membranes alive. How it compares with distillation and filtration
Distillation boils water and condenses the vapor, leaving dissolved solids in the boiler, and produces very pure water slowly with a real energy cost. Carbon filtration adsorbs chlorine and organics and leaves minerals alone. Reverse osmosis sits between them: broader than carbon, faster and less energy intensive than distillation, and continuous rather than batch. None of the three handles everything, which is why serious systems combine them: sediment and carbon to protect the membrane, the membrane for dissolved load, and a final carbon polish for taste.

Is purified by reverse osmosis the same as distilled?
No. Distillation boils and condenses the water, while reverse osmosis pushes it through a membrane under pressure. Both remove most dissolved solids, but they are different processes with different trade offs.
Does reverse osmosis remove minerals I want?
Yes. The membrane is not selective, so calcium and magnesium are rejected along with contaminants. Many systems add a remineralizing cartridge afterward, largely because the water otherwise tastes flat.
Why does an RO system send water to the drain?
