When a 1000 gpd reverse osmosis system is the right size

A system rated at a thousand gallons per day is well beyond what a kitchen tap needs and sits in light commercial territory: small food service, laboratories, plant rooms, aquaculture, and the larger end of whole house treatment. Choosing one means understanding what the rating assumes, because the number on the label is measured under conditions your site may not provide.

What a daily rating actually means

Production ratings are stated at a reference feed temperature, feed pressure and feed water quality. Colder water is more viscous and passes through a membrane more slowly, so the same system in an unheated plant room in winter produces noticeably less than its rating. Lower feed pressure reduces output directly. Higher dissolved solids in the feed reduce it again and increase the proportion sent to drain. Read the rating as a best case under stated conditions, and size with margin rather than to the exact requirement.

What has to sit in front of it

At this scale the pretreatment is the system, and skipping it turns membranes into consumables. Sediment filtration comes first. Carbon or another dechlorination stage is mandatory on a chlorinated supply, because chlorine degrades thin film composite membranes permanently. Hardness must be controlled by softening or antiscalant dosing, since scale forms fastest at the membrane face where water is being concentrated. On well water, iron and manganese need their own stage. Every one of those has to be sized for the same flow the membranes see, not for a household.

Storage, delivery and the reject stream

A membrane system produces at its own steady rate, which rarely matches how the site draws water, so an atmospheric storage tank and a delivery pump are normal at this scale rather than a small pressure tank. Size the tank on peak draw rather than daily total. The reject stream runs whenever the system produces and is a real volume at this rating, so the drain has to take it continuously and any septic system or discharge consent has to be checked. This is a design question, not an afterthought.

Whether the size is right at all

Work from measured use rather than an estimate, because an oversized system costs more to buy, sits idle in ways that encourage biological growth on the membranes, and needs the same pretreatment as one correctly sized. An undersized one runs continuously and never catches up. Where the requirement is a household's drinking water, this is far more system than needed and an under sink unit is the answer.
