Potable water systems: what makes household water drinkable

Potable water systems are the equipment that takes whatever arrives at your property and makes it fit to drink. On a municipal supply that usually means polishing water that is already treated. On a private well it means doing the whole job yourself, because nobody else is treating or testing the water before it reaches your family.

What potable means in practice

Potable simply means safe for human consumption. For a house on a community water system, potability is established before the water reaches you: the utility treats and disinfects it, and every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report listing what was detected, with the EPA maintaining a finder to locate yours. For a private well the responsibility sits with the owner. Private wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so there is no agency sampling your water or telling you it has changed. That distinction determines the entire shape of the system you need.

The components, in the order they go

A full well system runs in a sequence dictated by chemistry. Sediment filtration comes first to protect everything behind it. If the water is acidic, a neutralizer follows, because pH influences how well the later stages work. Iron and sulfur treatment comes next, usually an oxidizing filter, because those foul softener resin. The softener follows, taking out hardness including the hardness the neutralizer added. Disinfection, ordinarily an ultraviolet purifier, goes last on the point-of-entry train so it treats water that is already clear. Point-of-use reverse osmosis then sits under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking.

Point of entry against point of use

Point-of-entry equipment treats everything in the house, so showers, laundry and appliances all benefit. That is the right place for hardness, iron, sediment, sulfur odor and disinfection, because those are problems you experience at every fixture. Point-of-use equipment treats one tap. That is the right place for the expensive, contaminant-specific technologies: reverse osmosis for dissolved contaminants, certified lead cartridges, specialist PFAS adsorption. Treating the whole house to drinking-water standard is possible but you pay to purify the water you flush and irrigate with, which is rarely the right allocation of money.

Sizing, service and proving it works

Every stage in the train has a flow rating, and the system is only as good as its narrowest one, so size on the peak simultaneous demand of the house rather than the number of occupants. Each backwashing tank needs a drain and, for some, an outlet. UV lamps are replaced annually whether or not they still glow, because output falls before the lamp fails. Above all, prove the system rather than assuming it: take a test before installation and another after, and repeat annually on a well.
