Cartridges are rated by volume treated, and because the housing is small, that volume is modest. Most units include a counter or an indicator, which counts usage rather than measuring the water, so treat it as a reminder rather than a verdict. On a supply carrying grit or rust, the cartridge blocks physically long before the carbon is spent. Keep the aerator screen clean, check the connection at the spout occasionally for drips, and do not leave a spent cartridge in place, because damp exhausted carbon is a poor thing to run drinking water through.

A faucet mount is the cheapest and most portable option and suits renters and small households.
