How the system is put together

The core is a chemical feed pump drawing from a solution tank, injecting into the line after the pressure tank, usually triggered by a flow switch or by the well pump running so that dosing only happens when water is moving. After injection the water goes into a contact tank sized to give the reaction time to finish, then through a backwashing filter, typically catalytic carbon, that removes the oxidized solids and any residual peroxide. Leave out the contact tank and the reaction finishes inside your plumbing instead, which means iron particles reaching the fixtures.

Why it suits sulfur wells

Hydrogen sulfide is the compound behind the rotten-egg smell, and it is stubborn: it comes back the moment the water warms, it defeats plain sediment filtration, and modest carbon systems exhaust quickly against it. Peroxide oxidizes sulfide efficiently and converts it to elemental sulfur and sulfate, which the downstream filter handles. Because peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen, nothing lingering is added to the household supply, and there is no chlorine flavor to remove afterward. That last point is why many owners prefer it to a chlorinator despite the higher cost of solution.

Peroxide versus chlorination

Both approaches oxidize and both need contact time and a filter. Chlorine is cheaper per gallon treated, is widely available, and leaves a residual that continues to disinfect through the plumbing, which matters if bacteria are the concern. Peroxide is stronger against sulfide, produces no chlorinous taste and no chlorinated byproducts, but costs more, degrades in storage, particularly in warm or sunlit locations, and leaves no residual at all. If a coliform result is driving the project, the residual argument favors chlorine. If odor and iron are the whole problem, peroxide usually gives a better-tasting result.
