Hydrogen peroxide water treatment: how injection systems work

Hydrogen peroxide water treatment means metering food grade peroxide into the water line ahead of a contact tank and a filter, so dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized into particles that the filter can catch. It is a chemical feed system, not a filter, and it lives or dies on correct dosing and enough contact time.

What the peroxide is doing

Iron, manganese and sulfide arrive dissolved and invisible, which is why they slip through a plain sediment cartridge and then stain a sink hours later. Peroxide is a strong oxidizer that converts them to insoluble forms, rust colored iron particles, dark manganese particles and elemental sulfur, so that a media bed downstream has something solid to trap. It breaks down into water and oxygen, so no chloride, taste or byproduct is left behind in the treated water.

What a complete system looks like

A metering pump, a solution tank of dilute peroxide, an injection point on the pressure side of the well pump, a contact or retention tank sized for the dwell time the reaction needs, and then a backwashing carbon or catalytic media filter to strip the oxidized solids and any residual peroxide. A flow switch or a pump signal ties the injection to the well running, so the pump only doses when water is moving. Skipping the contact tank is the usual reason a system underperforms.

Peroxide compared with chlorine injection

Chlorine is cheaper per gallon treated, leaves a residual that keeps working through the plumbing, and is the recognized route when the well has a bacteria history. Peroxide oxidizes faster, needs less contact time, leaves no chlorine taste and does not create chlorinated byproducts, which is why owners with a taste complaint often prefer it. Peroxide is not a substitute for a disinfection strategy where coliform is present, and many wells run peroxide for iron plus ultraviolet for microbes.

Protecting the softener and the rest of the train

Order matters. Oxidized iron fouls softener resin, so the peroxide stage and its filter belong upstream of any softener, never after it. Living with a peroxide system

You will be mixing or buying solution and refilling the tank, checking that the metering pump is actually stroking, and periodically verifying that no peroxide is reaching the taps. Peroxide at feed strength is an oxidizer that burns skin and bleaches clothing, so gloves and eye protection are not optional and the storage tank belongs somewhere it cannot be knocked over. The injection check valve is the part that fails quietly, and a failed one lets water back into the solution tank.

Questions people ask about hydrogen peroxide water treatment

Does hydrogen peroxide disinfect a well?

It has oxidizing power against organisms in the contact tank, but it leaves no lasting residual through the plumbing the way chlorine does. Wells with a coliform history are usually treated with chlorine or ultraviolet rather than peroxide alone.

Do I still need a filter after peroxide injection?

Yes. Peroxide only converts dissolved metals and sulfide into particles. Without a backwashing carbon or catalytic media filter downstream those particles go straight to your fixtures and stain them.

Will peroxide leave a taste in the water?

Correctly dosed and followed by a carbon filter, no. Peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen, which is the main reason owners choose it over chlorine when the household objects to a chlorine taste.

Can peroxide replace a water softener?

No. Peroxide does nothing to calcium and magnesium, so scale and soap performance are unchanged. It handles iron, manganese and sulfur odor, and a softener remains the tool for hardness.
