Hydrogen peroxide injection doses a measured amount of peroxide into a well line so it oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into particles a filter can catch. It is chosen over chlorine mainly because it breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no chemical taste and nothing to strip out at the end.

How the system is put together

A chemical metering pump, triggered by a flow switch or the well pump circuit, injects peroxide through a fitting on the line after the pump. The dosed water then travels into a contact or retention tank so the reaction has time to complete. What leaves that tank is water carrying oxidized iron as rust-colored particles and sulfur as fine solids, which a backwashing catalytic carbon or media filter then removes. Without both the tank and the filter, you have simply moved the problem downstream.

Why peroxide instead of chlorine

Peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen, so no residual reaches the taps and no dechlorination stage is needed at the end of the train. It also handles hydrogen sulfide vigorously and does not create the chlorinous taste that homeowners complain about. Chlorine, on the other hand, leaves a residual that keeps working through the plumbing, which is what you want when bacteria are the primary problem. Handling, storage and dosing

The peroxide used in these systems is far stronger than the brown-bottle product from a pharmacy and it burns skin and damages eyes. Dosing is set against measured iron, manganese and sulfide concentrations and the household's flow, so it is adjusted after commissioning by testing the treated water, not set once from a chart and forgotten.

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a well owner is the only person deciding what treatment their water gets.
