Sulfur treatment is specified once and lived with for years, and the systems that keep working are the ones whose owners understand what wears out. Whichever technology was installed, air injection, chemical feed or catalytic media, the smell returning is nearly always a maintenance signal rather than a sign the system was wrong.
Air injection systems: the pocket and the media
These draw a pocket of air into the top of the vessel and pass water through it before a catalytic bed. Two things go wrong. The air draw itself fails, because the venturi or the air check valve fouls with iron or scale, and the vessel quietly loses its air pocket while continuing to backwash on schedule. And the catalytic media loses activity over years and needs replacing rather than cleaning. If the smell returns and the media is not old, check the air draw before ordering anything: it is the cheaper fault by a wide margin.
Chemical feed systems: solution, pump and injector
A dosing system needs its solution tank refilled and the mixture kept fresh, because oxidant solutions weaken in storage and a weak batch under doses without any alarm. The metering pump's injection point and check valve are the components that block, since the reaction they cause deposits exactly where the chemical enters, and a blocked injector stops dosing with no obvious symptom until the smell comes back. Check the residual downstream periodically rather than trusting that the pump is running.
The filter behind the oxidation stage
Every oxidation approach converts dissolved hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur particles, and something has to catch them. That filter loads, and when it does the pressure drop rises and particles begin passing through, which shows up as a faint yellow cast or grit at the taps. Backwash settings matter here as much as anywhere: too infrequent and the bed packs, and packed beds channel, which lets both particles and untreated water through. Watch the pressure difference across the vessel rather than waiting for a symptom.
Retesting, because the well changes
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody is monitoring the source but you, and sulfide levels are not fixed: they shift with the water table, with pumping patterns and after work on the well. A system sized for one load can be undersized two years later. Retest periodically and after any change in the smell, and treat a system that suddenly cannot keep up as a measurement question rather than a fault. Questions people ask about sulfur water treatment system
The smell has come back. Is the system finished?
Usually not. Check the air draw or the injector and the filter's pressure drop first, since a lost air pocket or a blocked injection point is far more common than exhausted media.
How long does catalytic media last?
Years rather than months, losing activity gradually. Replace it when the smell returns and the simpler causes have been ruled out.
Does the oxidant solution go off?
It weakens in storage, so a stale batch under doses without any alarm. Mix fresh and keep the tank out of heat and sunlight.
Why is there grit or a yellow cast at the taps?
