Picking a sulfur water filter system for well water

A sulfur water filter system exists to deal with hydrogen sulfide, the dissolved gas behind the rotten egg smell in well water. All the workable methods do the same two things in sequence: turn the gas into solid sulfur by oxidizing it, then filter the solid out. What separates the options is how the oxidation is done and how much iron comes along with it.

First find out where the smell starts

Before buying anything, run the cold tap at an outside hydrant and smell it, then run the hot inside. If only the hot water smells, the problem is almost certainly the magnesium sacrificial anode rod in your water heater reacting with sulfate-reducing bacteria, and swapping it for an aluminum or powered anode fixes the whole thing for the price of a rod. If the cold smells at the wellhead, it is in the source and you need treatment. If it smells only at some fixtures, suspect bacteria in the plumbing and disinfect. This ten minute check has saved a great many people an unnecessary system.

Air injection: the common answer

An air injection system draws a pocket of air into the top of a media tank during its regeneration cycle. Water passes through that air pocket, the hydrogen sulfide oxidizes to elemental sulfur, and the media bed below catches the solid before backwashing it to drain. There are no chemicals to buy, nothing to mix and nothing to refill, which is why it has become the default for household sulfur and iron. Vendors sell these as whole house iron and sulfur filters in capacity steps with published service flow ratings. The limits are real though: very high sulfide loads, low pH or heavy organic content can outrun what an air pocket can oxidize.

Chlorine injection for the hard cases

Where sulfide is heavy, where iron bacteria are present, or where the well keeps testing positive for coliform, a chemical feed pump doses chlorine into the line ahead of a contact or retention tank, and a backwashing filter downstream removes the precipitated sulfur and iron. A carbon bed after that strips the leftover chlorine taste. This handles more than air injection can and disinfects at the same time, but it is a system with a pump, a solution tank and a dosing rate that has to be maintained and adjusted. It is the right choice when air injection has been tried and the smell persists.

Catalytic carbon and what it is good for

Catalytic carbon is a surface-treated carbon that promotes the breakdown of hydrogen sulfide rather than merely adsorbing it, and it can handle light sulfide on its own in a backwashing tank. It is quiet, chemical-free and it also handles chloramine, which plain carbon struggles with. It is not the answer for heavy sulfide or for water carrying much iron, since the bed loads up and its capacity is finite. Questions people ask about sulfur water filter system

Only my hot water smells of sulfur. Do I need a filter?

Probably not. That pattern points at the water heater's sacrificial anode rod. Replacing a magnesium rod with aluminum or a powered anode usually clears it entirely.

Does a water softener remove sulfur smell?

No. Ion exchange targets hardness minerals and does nothing for dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. The gas needs oxidizing and filtering out, upstream of the softener.

Does air injection need chemicals?

No. It draws in an air pocket during its own regeneration cycle, so there is nothing to buy or refill. It does need a drain for backwash and adequate flow to clean the bed.

Will a carbon filter alone fix rotten egg smell?

Catalytic carbon can handle light sulfide, but standard carbon exhausts quickly and heavy sulfide or accompanying iron will overwhelm any carbon bed within weeks.
