Four approaches are in common household use and they differ mainly in the load they tolerate, what they need to regenerate, and how much attention they want.

Catalytic carbon, for light loads

Catalytic carbon has a modified surface that promotes the reaction converting sulfide, and on light loads it is the simplest option: a single backwashing vessel, no chemicals, no air pump, and media replaced every few years rather than regenerated. It is quiet, compact and undemanding. Its limit is capacity: pushed beyond a modest sulfide level it is consumed quickly and the smell returns sooner than the owner expects, which is why it is specified from a measured figure rather than from the strength of the smell.

Air injection, for moderate loads

These systems draw a pocket of air into the top of the vessel between cycles, and water passes through that air before reaching a catalytic bed, oxidizing the sulfide so the bed can catch it. They handle heavier loads than carbon alone, need no chemicals, and regenerate by backwashing and drawing a fresh air pocket. What goes wrong is the air draw itself: the venturi or the air check valve fouls with iron or scale, the vessel loses its pocket, and the system keeps cycling while treating little.

Manganese greensand and similar media

Greensand and its modern equivalents oxidize and filter in one bed and are regenerated on a schedule with an oxidant, traditionally permanganate. They handle iron, manganese and sulfide together, which suits the very common well that has all three, and they are well proven. The cost is the regenerant: a solution to keep stocked and mixed, a tank to refill, and the care that goes with handling it. They also need a proper backwash flow, which a modest well pump may not sustain.

Chemical feed, for heavy loads and bacteria

Dosing an oxidant ahead of a retention tank and filter handles the heaviest sulfide loads and is the approach that also deals with sulfur bacteria, since it disinfects as it oxidizes. It gives the most control and needs the most attention: solution mixed and kept fresh, an injection point that blocks, and a carbon stage afterwards where chlorine is the oxidant.
