The four stages, in order

Stage one is a sediment cartridge that removes grit, silt and rust so nothing abrasive reaches the rest of the unit. Stage two is carbon, usually a block, and its main job is stripping chlorine, because chlorine destroys a thin film composite membrane. Stage three is the membrane, the only stage that performs reverse osmosis, rejecting dissolved solids to the drain and sending product water to the storage tank. A three stage unit usually merges sediment and carbon into one combination cartridge. That saves space under a crowded sink and one housing to change, at the cost of having to replace both functions on the shorter of the two clocks. A five stage unit typically splits the carbon into two separate cartridges, or adds a remineralization stage after the tank, which puts back a little calcium and magnesium and raises pH slightly for taste. Six stage systems commonly add a UV lamp. None of these change the rejection performance of the membrane, which is the part doing the actual work, so compare membrane rating, daily production and certification rather than counting housings.

What it needs to work properly

A four stage system needs adequate incoming pressure, a drain connection for the reject stream, a cold water feed and space for the storage tank, which is usually the bulkiest component. Low pressure means slow refill and poorer rejection, and a booster pump is the standard remedy in a house where the pressure is marginal. The tank has an air charge that should be checked when the tank is empty, because a flat bladder mimics almost every other fault. Plan the drilling too: most installs need a hole for the dedicated faucet, and the sink deck or countertop material decides how hard that job is. The two pre-filters are consumables changed on a months-long cycle, the post-filter usually annually, and the membrane should last several years if the carbon stage is kept fresh. That dependency is the whole maintenance story: skip the carbon change and the membrane starts absorbing chlorine damage that never announces itself. Keep a baseline reading of dissolved solids taken with a handheld meter when the system is new, and compare against it once or twice a year. A slow rise is the membrane telling you it is finished. Flush a fresh set of cartridges before drinking, and sanitize the housings when the system is open for a membrane change.
