A 5 stage reverse osmosis system is the standard residential configuration, and the number is not marketing: each stage does a specific job and the sequence protects the expensive part in the middle. Knowing what each stage is for tells you which cartridges need changing most often and which symptom points to which stage.
Stage one: sediment prefilter
The first cartridge is a depth filter, usually spun polypropylene, whose job is to catch sand, silt, rust flakes and pipe scale before they reach anything else. It protects both the carbon stages, which pack and channel when loaded with particles, and the membrane, which is easily scored. This is normally the cartridge that loads fastest and the one whose replacement interval is set by how dirty your incoming water is. On a well it may need changing several times more often than the maker's default schedule suggests.
Stages two and three: the carbon prefilters
Two carbon stages follow, typically a granular activated carbon cartridge then a carbon block. Their primary job is not taste at this point in the chain, it is protecting the membrane, because chlorine chemically attacks the thin film composite material membranes are made from and destroys them quickly. Granular carbon handles bulk chlorine at good flow, and the block provides finer filtration and captures organics the loose media misses. On a chloraminated supply these should be catalytic carbon, because standard media reduces chloramine poorly and the membrane pays for it.
Stage four: the membrane itself
The reverse osmosis membrane is a semipermeable film wound into a spiral element inside a housing. Feed water under pressure passes across its surface, a portion crosses the film as purified permeate, and the rest sweeps the rejected dissolved solids away to drain. This is the stage that removes dissolved contaminants such as metals, nitrate and salts, which no cartridge upstream of it can touch. It lasts far longer than the prefilters, provided the prefilters are actually being changed, and its performance is measured by comparing dissolved solids in and out.
Stage five: the post carbon polish
The final stage is a small carbon cartridge between the storage tank and the faucet. Its job is to remove any taste picked up from the tank bladder or the tubing during storage and to give the water a clean finish at the faucet. Because it sits after the tank, it also catches anything the tank contributes, which is why it should be changed at the same time the tank is sanitized. In systems sold with a remineralization option, that cartridge either replaces or follows this one.
Which stages you replace and how often
In practice the sediment and two carbon prefilters are the routine consumables, changed on a regular cycle, with the post filter usually done at the same time or on a slightly longer interval. The membrane is a separate, longer term replacement and its life depends almost entirely on prefilter discipline and on whether the feed water is softened. If your system suddenly makes water slowly, look at the prefilters first; if the water tastes different but flow is fine, look at the membrane.
