A 5 micron sediment filter catches fine silt, rust flakes and the grit that clouds a glass of water, and it is the standard stage immediately upstream of a carbon block, a reverse osmosis membrane or a UV lamp. It is the wrong first filter on a dirty well, because sand and scale will blind it in days. Put something coarse ahead of it and it will last.

What five micron actually catches

Micron ratings describe particle size, and five microns is fine enough to take out most visible turbidity, fine sand, silt and flaked rust, while passing dissolved minerals, chlorine, iron in solution and anything biological you would need a UV lamp or a much tighter membrane to address. That is the important limit: a sediment filter is a strainer, not a purifier. Water can run perfectly clear through a five micron cartridge and still be hard, still smell of sulfur, and still fail a bacteria test. If the complaint is taste, odor, staining or a lab result, the sediment stage is not the fix, though it is often needed to protect the equipment that is.

Nominal versus absolute, and why it matters

Two cartridges both marked five micron can perform very differently. A nominal rating means the cartridge captures most particles at that size, with no guarantee about the rest; an absolute rating means essentially everything at that size is retained. Spun polypropylene cartridges are typically nominal and are cheap, high capacity workhorses. Pleated cartridges give more surface area in the same sump, hold more dirt before the pressure drops, and some are washable. String wound cartridges are graded so the outside is coarser than the inside, which lets one cartridge do the job of two stages. Stage it, do not overload it

On a well with visible grit, running straight into a five micron cartridge means changing it constantly and living with weak showers in between. Is 5 micron better than 20 micron?

Does a 5 micron sediment filter remove bacteria?

No. Bacteria are far smaller than five microns. Disinfection needs UV, chlorination or a membrane rated for microbiological reduction.
