Where a 50 micron sediment filter belongs in a system

A fifty micron cartridge catches only the larger particles, which sounds like a poor filter until you understand what it is for. It is a first stage, taking the bulk load off everything behind it, and used that way it makes a whole train cheaper to run. Used as the only filter on water needing finer treatment, it will disappoint.

What it stops and what it passes

At fifty microns a cartridge catches sand, coarse grit, rust flakes, pipe scale, and the debris that appears after work on the mains or a well. It passes fine silt, the material that makes water look faintly cloudy, and anything dissolved. That makes it excellent at protecting mechanical parts, pump seals, valve seats and appliance solenoids from damage, and useless for improving the clarity of water that looks hazy rather than gritty.

Why coarse first is the efficient arrangement

A finer cartridge blocks when it has captured enough material, and most of the mass in gritty water is in the large particles. Putting a coarse cartridge first means the fine one behind it never sees that mass, so it lasts many times longer and the household changes cartridges far less often. The coarse element is also cheap. On well water carrying sand, this arrangement is the difference between changing a filter every few weeks and changing one twice a year.

Where it beats a finer element outright

Ahead of a pump, where grit does mechanical damage and flow must not be restricted. Ahead of a spin down or backwashing filter, as a simple guard. On irrigation lines feeding emitters, where the emitter orifice sets the requirement and finer filtration is wasted. And after any plumbing work, temporarily, to catch the debris that gets lifted. In each case flow matters more than clarity, which is exactly the balance a coarse cartridge strikes.

Knowing when it is doing its job

Because it is coarse, a fifty micron cartridge should have a long life and a low pressure drop. If it is blocking quickly, the water is carrying far more sediment than a household supply should, which on a well points at the well itself rather than the filter: a failed screen, a pump set too low, or a deteriorating formation.
