1/4 check valve: its job on filter and ice maker lines

A 1/4 check valve is a small one-way fitting on quarter inch tubing that lets water pass in one direction and blocks it in the other. On household water treatment it turns up in two places above all: on the permeate line of a reverse osmosis system, and on the feed to a refrigerator ice maker.

What it prevents on a reverse osmosis system

When line pressure drops, water stored in the tank can push backwards through the membrane housing and out to the drain, quietly emptying the tank and leaving the system running to refill it. A check valve on the permeate line stops that backflow. It is also what allows the automatic shutoff valve to sense a full tank properly, since that valve works on the pressure difference across the membrane. A missing or stuck-open check valve therefore shows up as a system that never stops producing.

Ice makers and appliance feeds

On a refrigerator or ice maker line, the check valve stops water in the appliance from siphoning back toward the supply when pressure falls, which protects the taste of the filtered water and prevents cross-connection between the appliance and the house line. It is the same physical fitting in quarter inch push-fit form. Many icemaker kits include one, and it is worth confirming it is present rather than assuming, particularly on an installation somebody else assembled.

Fitting it the right way round

Every check valve carries a molded arrow showing the direction of allowed flow, and fitting it backwards blocks the line entirely, which is a confusingly complete failure that people diagnose as a blockage. Cut the tubing square with a proper tube cutter so the push-fit collet seals, push it fully home until it seats, then tug to confirm. Support the tubing so the fitting is not carrying a bend, and keep it accessible: a check valve buried behind a tank is a nuisance when it needs replacing.

How to tell one has failed

A check valve fails in one of two ways. Stuck open, it lets backflow through, and the symptom is a reverse osmosis system that runs continuously or a tank that empties overnight. Stuck closed, it blocks the line, and the symptom is no water at all downstream. Both are cheap to replace and neither is repairable, so swap rather than tinker. If a new valve solves a continuous-run problem only briefly, look upstream at feed pressure and the shutoff valve as well.
