A four stage water filtration system is a marketing description rather than a technical one, and the same phrase covers two completely different products. At a tap it usually means a reverse osmosis unit with the stages counted a particular way. On a whole house main it means four treatment vessels in series. Knowing which you are looking at is the first thing.
Four stages at a tap
Under a sink, four stages normally describes a reverse osmosis system: a sediment cartridge, a carbon cartridge, the membrane and a polishing carbon filter on the tank outlet. Compared with a five stage unit, one carbon stage has been dropped, usually the granular carbon, leaving a single block to protect the membrane from chlorine. That is adequate on lightly chlorinated water and marginal where chloramine is dosed. The remaining stages do the same jobs in the same order and the system behaves identically otherwise.
Four stages on a whole house main
Here it means four vessels in series and the specification varies far more between products. A typical arrangement is a sediment stage, a carbon stage for chlorine and taste, a copper zinc or KDF stage aimed at heavy metals and bacteriostatic control, and a fine post filter. On well specified systems the third stage is a softener or an iron filter instead, which changes the product entirely. Read what each vessel actually contains rather than counting them, because the count says nothing about capability.
Whether four is better than three
Not automatically. Stage count is the weakest specification in the category, because a fourth stage that duplicates the third adds cost and pressure drop without adding capability, while three well chosen stages sized correctly beat four undersized ones every time. What matters is whether the stages match your water: a system with no iron treatment is the wrong buy on iron bearing well water no matter how many cartridges it has, and a system with two carbon stages is not twice as good at chlorine as one properly sized bed.
Choose from the test, not the box
The right approach is the reverse of how these are usually bought. Test the water, list what actually needs treating, then find the system whose stages address that list, and only then look at what it is called.
