A 3 stage water filtration system is three housings plumbed in series, and the point of the arrangement is division of labor. Each stage removes what would otherwise destroy the stage behind it, so the expensive media lasts and the cheap media takes the abuse. Understanding what belongs in each position is the whole skill.
Stage one: sediment
The first cartridge is always mechanical. It catches sand, silt, rust flakes and pipe scale, and its only job is to stop that debris from packing into the carbon behind it. Sediment cartridges come in different pore ratings, and on dirty water it is common to run a coarse cartridge first so the finer one behind it is not blinded in a week. This is the cartridge you will change most often, and it is the cheapest, which is exactly how the system is meant to work. If it is loading up faster than monthly, you need a spin-down separator or a backwashing filter ahead of the whole assembly.
Stage two: carbon for taste, chlorine and organics
The second stage is normally activated carbon, either granular or a carbon block. It handles chlorine, the compounds behind musty and earthy tastes, and a range of organic chemicals. A carbon block filters more finely than granular carbon and gives more consistent contact, while granular carbon passes more flow with less pressure drop. Carbon has no visible end of life, so it is changed on the maker's schedule rather than when it looks dirty. Because it is the stage that most improves how the water tastes, it is also the one people notice immediately when it is finally exhausted.
Stage three: the specialist
The third position is where the system is tailored to your actual water. It might be a second carbon block for extra contact time, a KDF or copper-zinc media for chlorine and bacteriostatic control, a lead-reduction cartridge, or an iron and manganese cartridge on a well. This is the stage worth choosing deliberately from a water test rather than accepting whatever the kit shipped with. A stage that targets a contaminant you do not have is a pressure drop you are paying for and nothing else, which is why a test comes before the purchase.
When three stages is not enough
Cartridge systems have a hard ceiling. Heavy iron, hydrogen sulfide, high sediment loads and bacteria all defeat a three stage cartridge train, either by blinding the cartridges within days or by passing straight through. Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no one else is checking, and the EPA cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Is a 3 stage system better than a single big filter?
For most water, yes. Splitting the work means the cheap sediment cartridge protects the expensive carbon, so the carbon lasts much longer and the total cost per year is lower.
What order should the stages go in?
Sediment first, then carbon, then the specialist stage. Reversing sediment and carbon packs debris into the carbon bed and destroys it quickly.
Does a 3 stage system remove bacteria?
No. Cartridge filtration is not disinfection. A well that tests positive for coliform needs shock chlorination and continuous treatment such as a UV lamp.
