Choosing a water filter for sediment by particle size

Sediment filtration looks like the simplest decision in water treatment and it is the one most often got wrong, because the instinct is to buy the finest filter available. A very fine cartridge on a dirty supply blocks in days, throttles the house, and costs more in replacements than a properly staged arrangement that catches coarse material first.

What the micron rating means, and what it does not

A micron rating describes the size of particle a filter is intended to stop, but the number alone is incomplete. A nominal rating means the filter captures most particles at that size and lets some through. An absolute rating means it captures essentially all of them, and it is the rating that matters where a specific claim is being made, such as protection against cysts. Two cartridges printed with the same number can therefore perform quite differently. Read which kind of rating is claimed rather than comparing numbers across brands.

Stage it: coarse first, fine second

On water carrying a real sediment load, the effective arrangement is two cartridges in series: a coarse one to take the bulk and a finer one behind it to polish. The coarse stage does the heavy lifting cheaply, and the fine stage lasts many times longer than it would on its own because it only sees what got past. This costs one more housing and saves repeatedly on cartridges and on the nuisance of a house at low pressure. Where only one stage is possible, choose the rating from what the water is actually carrying rather than from ambition.

Cartridge construction changes the answer

Spun or melt blown cartridges are graded through their depth, coarse on the outside and finer within, so they hold a large volume of dirt before blocking and suit heavy loads. Pleated cartridges present far more surface area in the same housing, hold less dirt through their depth, and are often washable, which suits lighter loads and lower running cost. String wound cartridges are the traditional depth option. On very heavy loads a backwashing media filter replaces cartridges entirely and cleans itself instead of being thrown away.

Sizing, and knowing when to change it

Size the housing on the flow the house actually draws at peak, since an undersized housing throttles everything and a large diameter one both flows better and lasts longer. Fit a pressure gauge before and after if you want an honest indicator: a rising difference across the filter is the real signal to change it, far more reliable than appearance or the calendar.
