Why hot water changes the chemistry
Activated carbon removes chlorine by adsorption, and adsorption weakens as temperature rises, so a carbon cartridge that performs well on a cold kitchen tap loses a good part of its effect in a hot shower. That is the single most important fact about shower filtration and the reason cheap carbon-only shower heads underperform their marketing. Media that work by chemical reaction rather than adsorption are largely unaffected by temperature, which is why the products worth buying use them either alone or in combination with carbon.
The media that work hot
KDF is a granular copper-zinc alloy that reduces free chlorine to chloride through a redox reaction, and it works at shower temperatures where carbon fades. It also resists bacterial growth in the damp environment inside a shower filter, which is a real secondary benefit. Calcium sulfite is the other common choice, reacting directly with chlorine and performing well hot, though it is consumed as it works and therefore has a defined life. Many good cartridges layer both, sometimes with a carbon polish, so each media covers what the others do not.
Chloramine is the harder case
Many utilities use chloramine, chlorine bonded with ammonia, because it holds a disinfectant residual further into the distribution network. It is also considerably harder to remove: it reacts more slowly and needs a longer contact time than free chlorine, which is exactly what a shower head cannot give. Some catalytic carbon formulations handle it better than standard carbon, but expectations should be lower than for free chlorine.
