Hardness passes straight through, so if your complaint is soap that will not lather and film on the tiles, you need a softener rather than a shower cartridge.
Replacement intervals and the honest failure mode
Shower cartridges exhaust silently. There is no pressure drop and no taste warning, so the day the media stops reacting looks exactly like the day it was installed. Manufacturers publish an interval in months or in gallons for each cartridge, and hard, hot or heavy use shortens it. Write the install date on the housing with a marker. Replacing it on the calendar is the only practical way to know the filter is still doing anything.

Will a shower filter help with hard water?
