A chlorine shower filter is a small cartridge fitted between the shower arm and the head, and it uses different media from the carbon filter on your kitchen tap for one reason: hot water. Carbon adsorbs poorly at shower temperatures and can release what it has already captured, so shower filters rely on media that work by chemical reduction rather than adsorption.
Why kitchen filter media do not work in a shower
Activated carbon holds contaminants by adsorption, a physical process that weakens as temperature rises. In a shower running at bathing temperature, carbon captures less and can give up compounds it captured earlier. Shower filters therefore use copper-zinc alloy media, usually described as KDF, and calcium sulfite. Both work by chemical reduction, converting free chlorine to chloride, and both are more effective hot than cold. Calcium sulfite in particular performs well across the whole shower temperature range, which is why it appears in most cartridges either alone or layered with the alloy media.
The chloramine caveat
Many utilities have switched from free chlorine to chloramine, a more stable disinfectant that persists further into the distribution system. Chloramine is much harder to remove than free chlorine, and most shower filter media address it only partially. If your utility uses chloramine, expect a shower filter to reduce the smell rather than eliminate it, and be suspicious of any cartridge claiming complete removal at shower flow rates. The place to check is your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report, which the EPA requires every community water system to publish and maintains a finder for, since it names the disinfectant in use.
Fitting, flow and cartridge life
Most units thread onto the shower arm ahead of the head, so nothing behind the wall is touched and the job is a wrench and some tape. Inline models keep your existing shower head; combination models replace it. Either way you are adding a restriction, and a cartridge nearing the end of its life adds more, so a gradual loss of pressure is the normal signal to change it. Life is quoted in gallons and in months. Reduction media are consumed by reacting rather than saturated by adsorption, so a shower used twice a day exhausts a cartridge far sooner than the calendar figure suggests.
What a shower filter will and will not change
It reduces the chlorine smell in the steam and the chlorine contact on skin and hair, which is the reason most people buy one. It does not soften water: hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, ion exchange is the only thing that removes it, and no shower cartridge does that. So if your complaint is soap that will not lather, spotting on the glass, or scale on the head, a shower filter is the wrong purchase and a softener is the right one. Questions people ask about chlorine shower filter
Do shower filters soften water?
No. Softening requires ion exchange to remove dissolved calcium and magnesium, and no shower cartridge does that. Scale and poor lather need a softener, not a filter.
Will a shower filter remove chloramine?
Only partially. Chloramine is far more stable than free chlorine and most shower media reduce rather than eliminate it. Check your utility's annual report to see which disinfectant is used.
Why does the water pressure drop after a few months?
A loading cartridge adds restriction as it nears the end of its life. Falling pressure is the practical signal to replace it, alongside the rated volume and interval.
