A filter for shower use exists to deal with one main thing: the chlorine or chloramine your utility adds, which you meet as vapor in a hot, enclosed room. Why a shower is a hard place to filter

Filtration needs contact time, and a shower gives almost none. Water passes through a small cartridge at full fixture flow, which is many times faster than the trickle a drinking water filter sees. It also arrives hot, and heat degrades ordinary activated carbon and drives volatile compounds off before they can be adsorbed. KDF, catalytic carbon and the media that work hot

The workhorse in most shower filters is KDF, a copper and zinc alloy that reduces free chlorine by an electrochemical reaction rather than by adsorption, so it keeps working at hot water temperatures and high flow. Catalytic carbon is the other serious option and is the better choice where the utility uses chloramine, which ordinary carbon barely touches. Many cartridges combine both, with a coarse layer to catch particles. Vitamin C, usually ascorbic acid, genuinely neutralizes chlorine but is consumed as it works and depletes quickly, so it suits a short course of use rather than a permanent install.

What a shower filter will not do

It will not soften water. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and removing them takes ion exchange with a resin bed and a salt regeneration cycle, which no in line cartridge can perform. It will not reliably remove lead, because lead reduction claims depend on tested contact time that a shower does not provide. It will not sterilize water, and it will not fix a rotten egg smell arriving from a well. If any of those are your actual complaint, the shower is the wrong place to spend the money.

Inline, showerhead or handheld

Inline units thread between the shower arm and your existing head, which keeps a head you like and puts the cartridge where you can reach it. Combined filter showerheads replace the head entirely and are tidier but tie the filter to that fixture. Handheld versions put the cartridge in the hose. Whichever you choose, check the cartridge is a common size you can still buy in two years, and note that adding a filter body adds a little pressure drop, which is noticeable if your supply pressure is already marginal.

Change it before it stops working

Shower cartridges do not announce exhaustion. Flow stays fine and the only signal is that the chlorine smell comes back, which you may not notice because it returns gradually. Set a calendar reminder based on the manufacturer interval and how many people use that shower daily, and shorten it if your utility runs a high disinfectant residual.
