A shower filter cartridge is the consumable part of the unit, and it is where all the actual performance lives. Shower conditions are hostile to ordinary filter media: the water is hot, the flow is fast, and contact time is brief, so the media inside a shower cartridge are chosen for entirely different reasons.
What the media are and why
Most shower cartridges are built around copper-zinc granules, a redox medium that converts free chlorine as water passes and keeps working in hot water where activated carbon loses much of its capacity. Calcium sulfite is another common choice, effective on chlorine and popular in compact cartridges. Some products add a small carbon stage for odor, and vitamin C cartridges use ascorbic acid to neutralize chlorine and chloramine, which works well but is consumed quickly. Changing one without damaging anything
Shut off the shower, then unscrew the housing. On an inline unit that means separating it from the shower arm and the head; on a filtered head it usually means twisting the front section off. These are plastic threads with a rubber washer or O-ring making the seal, so hand tightening is correct and a wrench is how threads get stripped. Seat the new cartridge in the marked flow direction, check the washer is present and flat, refit and run the shower to check for drips at the joints. Then run it for a minute or two to flush loose media before anyone uses it.
How often, and how to tell
Shower cartridges are rated in gallons, and the interval that results depends on how many people shower and for how long, so a rating quoted in months assumes a household that may not be yours. Nothing visible tells you a cartridge is spent, because redox media keep passing water at the same rate long after they stop converting chlorine. Some cartridges do discolor, which is a hint rather than a measure. The practical approach is to write the fitted date on the housing with a marker, keep a spare, and shorten the interval if the chlorine smell in the bathroom starts returning.
