A laboratory testing kit is a small box that looks unremarkable and is quite precisely designed: each bottle is intended for a particular group of analyses, some contain preservative, and the instructions describe conditions that materially change the numbers. Understanding what is in the box before opening it is what makes the result worth paying for.
The bottles and why they differ
A sterile bottle, often containing a tablet or a small quantity of preservative, for bacteria. Acid preserved bottles for metals, which stop dissolved metals plating out onto the container before analysis. Plain bottles for general chemistry. And for volatile compounds, small vials that must be filled with no air space at all, because anything that can evaporate will move into a bubble and out of the analysis. Do not rinse any of them, since rinsing removes preservative and compromises sterility.
The instructions that change the answer
Stagnation time for lead and copper, which need a first draw sample from a tap that has stood several hours, against running the tap until cold for well chemistry, which samples the aquifer rather than the plumbing. Whether to remove the aerator. Whether to disinfect the tap outlet for a bacteria sample. Fill levels. And the holding time, which is why the return label and the timing of posting matter as much as the sampling itself. Read them all before starting rather than bottle by bottle.
Choosing which kit to buy
Match the panel to your situation rather than buying the largest available. On a private well a sensible baseline is coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids, plus whatever is known locally such as arsenic or radon. On a community supply, the EPA notes every system publishes an annual report covering required monitoring, so the tests worth paying for are usually about your own plumbing, principally lead. Local health departments know what turns up in your area.
Reading the report
Look at the detection limit alongside each result, because not detected means below that limit rather than absent, and limits differ between methods. Look at which benchmark each result is compared against. And keep the report, because a single figure is far less informative than a trend across several years, particularly on a well where conditions change.
