Filter sand is silica sand graded to a consistent particle size and used as the straining layer in backwashing water filters, where it physically traps suspended sediment as water percolates through the bed. It removes particles, not dissolved contaminants: turbidity, grit and rust flakes are its territory, while anything dissolved passes straight through. In residential treatment it appears mostly in whole-house sediment filters on wells and as the support layer under specialty media.
What filter sand removes, and what it cannot
A sand bed is a depth filter: particles larger than the gaps between grains lodge in the upper layers, and progressively finer material is caught deeper down. That makes it effective on visible sediment, silt and oxidized rust particles carried in from a well. It does nothing to dissolved iron, hardness minerals, chlorine, or anything else in solution, because dissolved matter is smaller than any gap a sand grain can form. If your water stains fixtures but runs clear from the tap, the iron is dissolved and sand alone will not touch it: that job needs oxidizing media or a softener under the right conditions.
Multimedia beds and specialty media built on sand
Modern backwashing filters rarely run sand alone. A multimedia bed stacks coarse anthracite over sand over fine garnet, so large particles load the top layer and the finer layers polish, which lets the bed run longer between backwashes than sand by itself. Sand also serves as the support bed under specialty media like manganese greensand, which oxidizes and captures iron and manganese. Penn State Extension notes both metals carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese: staining starts near those levels, which is why greensand beds exist for well owners.
Backwashing, bed life and replacement
A sand or multimedia bed cleans itself by backwashing: reversing flow lifts the bed, flushes trapped sediment to drain, and resettles the layers. With adequate backwash flow the media itself lasts years, but beds do eventually foul, compact or lose grade, showing up as pressure loss that backwashing no longer cures, sediment breakthrough, or media appearing at fixtures. At that point the media gets replaced rather than the whole tank. Questions people ask about filter sand
Is filter sand the same as play sand or masonry sand?
No. Filter sand is silica graded to a tight, specified particle size so the bed filters predictably and backwashes cleanly. Ungraded sand channels, packs and can foul a filter valve.
Does a sand filter remove iron from well water?
Only iron that is already oxidized into particles. Clear-water dissolved iron passes through sand; removing it takes oxidizing media such as greensand, aeration ahead of the bed, or a softener within its limits.
How long does filter sand last before replacement?
With proper backwashing, typically many years. Replace the bed when backwashing no longer restores flow, sediment starts breaking through, or the media itself escapes into the plumbing.
