How a centrifugal sand filter separates grit from well water

A centrifugal separator is the least fussy piece of equipment on a sandy well. Water enters the body tangentially, spins, and the heavier particles are thrown to the wall and drop into a collection chamber while clean water leaves from the centre. There is no cartridge, no media and nothing to block, which is why it is normally the first stage on a gritty supply.

Separation by density, not by pore size

This is the key distinction. A cartridge or a screen stops particles larger than an opening, and it blocks as it works. A centrifugal separator sorts by how heavy a particle is relative to the water carrying it, so dense material such as sand and grit is removed efficiently while light material passes through regardless of size. That means it will not remove silt that stays suspended, will not remove organic debris, and will not touch anything dissolved. What it does remove, it removes without ever restricting flow.

Flow rate is what makes it work

The spin depends on water entering fast enough, so a separator has a flow range rather than a maximum. Below the range there is not enough velocity to throw particles outward and separation falls off, which is why an oversized separator on a modest well performs worse than a correctly sized one. Above the range, pressure loss climbs. Size it on the actual flow the well delivers, and where a household's draw varies widely, that is worth checking rather than assuming a single figure covers it.

Purging the collection chamber

Separated sand collects in a chamber at the bottom and has to be removed, either by opening a manual valve periodically or with an automatic purge valve on a timer. Neglecting it fills the chamber, at which point the separator stops separating and starts passing sand through, usually without anyone noticing until the symptoms return. A manual valve suits a household that will remember; an automatic purge suits one that will not. Route the purge to a drain that can take grit rather than into a septic system.

Where it sits, and what follows it

Ahead of everything: the pressure tank where the design allows, and certainly ahead of any cartridge filter, softener, iron filter or ultraviolet lamp, since sand damages or shades all of them. Behind it, a cartridge or media filter deals with the fine material the separator cannot, and that filter now lasts far longer for having the coarse load taken off it.
