How a centrifugal water filter separates without a screen

A centrifugal separator has no filter element at all. Water enters the body tangentially, spins, and heavier particles are thrown outward and drop into a collection chamber while clean water leaves from the centre. There is nothing to block and nothing to buy repeatedly, which makes it the natural first stage on any supply carrying grit.

Density, not pore size

This is the distinction that decides what it can do. A cartridge stops particles larger than an opening and blocks as it works. A separator sorts by how dense a particle is relative to the water carrying it, so sand and grit are removed efficiently while light material passes through regardless of size. It will not remove silt that stays suspended, will not remove organic debris, and will not touch anything dissolved. What it does remove, it removes without ever restricting flow.

Flow range decides performance

The spin depends on water entering fast enough, so a separator has a working flow range rather than a simple maximum. Below the range there is too little velocity to throw particles outward and separation falls off, which means an oversized unit on a modest well performs worse than a correctly sized one. Above the range, pressure loss climbs. Where household draw varies widely, that is worth checking rather than assuming one figure covers everything from a single tap to a full bath filling.

The collection chamber has to be purged

Separated grit accumulates at the bottom and has to be removed, either by opening a manual valve periodically or with an automatic purge on a timer. Neglect it and the chamber fills, at which point the separator stops separating and passes grit through, usually unnoticed until the symptoms return. Choose manual if the household will remember and automatic if it will not. Route the purge to a drain that can take grit rather than into a septic system.

Where it sits

First, ahead of everything: before the pressure tank where the design allows, and certainly before any cartridge filter, softener, media vessel or ultraviolet chamber, since grit damages or shades all of them. A cartridge or media filter behind it then deals with the fine material the separator cannot, and lasts far longer for having the coarse load taken off it.
