Why the spinning matters
An ordinary cartridge filter catches particles in the element and holds them there until you replace it, so on genuinely sandy water it blinds in days. A spin down works differently: the tangential inlet keeps water rotating so the sand is flung outward and settles into the bowl rather than packing into the mesh. That makes it a separator with a reusable screen, not a consumable. On a well that pumps sand after a storm or as the pump ages, it is the difference between a filter you flush in ten seconds and a cartridge you buy every fortnight. Do I have to replace the screen in a spin down filter?
Not routinely. The stainless screen is reusable: you flush it with the valve and occasionally remove and scrub it. Replace it only if it is torn or corroded.
