Green sand filter media, regeneration and replacement

Green sand filter media is the working part of an iron and manganese filter: a granular mineral whose surface carries a manganese oxide coating that oxidizes dissolved metals on contact and holds the resulting solids until backwash carries them to drain. Understanding the media, rather than the tank around it, is what tells you why a filter has stopped performing.

Glauconite green sand and the modern substitutes

Classic green sand is glauconite, a naturally green marine mineral, coated with manganese oxide. It works well and it has real constraints: a limited tolerance for strong oxidizers, a temperature ceiling, a relatively high backwash flow requirement and a finite supply. Newer media put the same catalytic manganese oxide coating on a silica sand core, which is lighter, backwashes at a lower flow rate, tolerates chlorine better and is what most new systems ship with today. They are not always interchangeable in an existing vessel, because the required backwash rate and bed expansion differ. Check the media's data sheet against your valve settings before swapping.

Regeneration: keeping the coating active

The manganese oxide coating is consumed as it oxidizes iron and manganese, so it has to be replenished. Intermittent regeneration draws a dose of potassium permanganate solution from a small tank during the backwash cycle, which recharges the bed between service runs and demands that someone keeps that solution mixed and topped up. Continuous regeneration feeds a low level of chlorine or permanganate into the water ahead of the filter at all times, so the coating never depletes. Underdosing shows up as iron breaking through into the house; overdosing with permanganate shows up as pink water at the tap, which is its own unmistakable warning.

What the bed needs from the backwash

Backwash is not optional housekeeping, it is what keeps the media working. The upflow has to be fast enough to expand the bed, lift the trapped solids and carry them out of the tank, and that flow rate is specific to the media in use and to the water temperature. Cold water is denser and lifts the bed more easily, so a system set up in summer can over-expand and lose media in winter. Too little backwash and the bed cements into a solid mass with channels through it, at which point the filter is passing water rather than treating it, and often the only cure is replacing the media.

When to top up and when to replace

Some media is carried out with every backwash, so the bed depth slowly falls and needs topping up over the years. Replacement rather than topping up is called for when the bed has cemented, when it is coated with iron bacteria slime, when organics or tannins have blinded the surface, or when regeneration no longer restores performance. Penn State Extension notes iron and manganese carry secondary aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, so a post-filter lab test is the honest measure of whether the bed is still doing its job. How long does green sand media last?

Years with proper regeneration and backwash, losing a little with each cycle so the bed needs topping up. Cementing, iron bacteria or organic blinding force earlier replacement.

Why is my water pink?

Overdosed potassium permanganate carrying through the filter. Reduce the dose and check the regeneration settings, since permanganate should be fully consumed within the bed.

Can I swap classic green sand for a silica-core media?

Often, but not blindly. The required backwash rate, bed expansion and chlorine tolerance differ, so the valve cycle settings have to be checked against the new media's data sheet.

Why has iron started coming through the filter?

Usually a depleted oxidant supply, a bed that has cemented from insufficient backwash, low pH, or media that has reached the end of its usable life and needs replacing.
