Operating a sand filter for well water so the bed keeps working

A sand media filter on a well is close to maintenance free when its cycle is right and quietly useless when it is not, and nothing about the installation tells you which. The bed either fluidizes properly during backwash or it packs and channels, and the difference comes down to three settings and one habit.

Backwash flow is the requirement to check first

Lifting a sand bed needs a specific flow rate determined by the vessel diameter and the media's density, delivered continuously for the whole backwash duration rather than briefly. On a well that is a different question from whether the pump can meet household peak draw: it has to sustain that rate for several minutes without the well drawing down. If it cannot, the bed never fluidizes, dirt stays in place, and the media gradually packs while the valve continues cycling on schedule.

Frequency and duration

Set frequency from the actual sediment load rather than a factory default. Too rare and the bed compacts and channels; too often and water goes down the drain for nothing. Start conservative and extend the interval while watching the pressure drop across the vessel between cycles. Duration must be long enough to lift the bed and carry the released material out, followed by a rinse step that settles the bed back into its graded order before service resumes.

Watching a cycle, which is the habit that matters

Run a manual backwash and watch the drain. It should run visibly dirty and then progressively clear, which is the evidence the bed is being cleaned. Water clear from the start usually means the bed is not lifting. Media appearing in the discharge means it is being over fluidized or the upper distributor has failed. Time the cycle. Do this at commissioning to establish a baseline and every few months afterwards, because it is the only routine test that proves the filter works.

Media, and what a sand bed cannot do

Sand wears slowly by attrition and is topped up or replaced when a backwash no longer restores the pressure drop, typically after years. Multimedia beds with anthracite above sand handle a wider particle range. What none of them do is remove dissolved iron, hardness or organisms, so a sand filter is a sediment stage in a train rather than a treatment.
