What a water softener sizing calculator needs from you

Sizing a softener is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is only as good as three inputs. Get them right and any reasonable calculator lands on the same answer. Get one of them wrong, particularly the hardness figure or the iron, and the result is a unit that regenerates too often, wastes salt, or runs out of soft water before the end of the day.

Input one: hardness, in the right unit

This is the number everything else multiplies, so it is worth getting from a measurement rather than a regional estimate. The USGS reports hardness as milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate, with soft at 0 to 60, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180, while the trade commonly uses grains per gallon, whose figures are much smaller. Feeding a calculator a figure in the wrong unit produces a wildly wrong answer, and it is the single most common sizing error.

Input two: how much water the household uses

Calculators usually ask for occupants and apply a per person daily figure. That default is a reasonable starting point and it is only a default: a household with a power shower, a large garden served from the softened line, or teenagers will exceed it, while a couple who are out all day will not reach it. If you have metered bills, use the real figure. Sizing on people alone is why some softeners regenerate far more often than their owners expected.

Input three: iron, which is not optional

Dissolved iron consumes softener capacity, so a calculator that asks for it is applying a compensation to the hardness figure, usually by adding several units of hardness for each unit of iron. Skipping it undersizes the unit. It also matters for a different reason: Penn State Extension notes softeners can remove dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls resin. Outside those conditions, sizing is not the problem and an iron filter is needed first.

Reading the answer

The output is a resin volume, usually expressed as a grain capacity, chosen so the unit regenerates at a sensible interval rather than every day or once a fortnight. Both extremes are inefficient: frequent regeneration wastes salt and water, while very infrequent regeneration leaves resin sitting loaded. If two sizes are close, the larger generally regenerates less often and uses salt more efficiently at the cost of purchase price and space.
