Conversely, if a twenty five micron cartridge is coming out visibly clean after months, the water is cleaner than the rating assumes and there is no benefit in staging at all.
Reading the rating
As with any cartridge, check whether the rating is nominal, meaning most particles at that size are caught, or absolute, meaning essentially all are, since only absolute supports a specific claim. And check the construction, because a depth cartridge holds dirt through its thickness and fails gradually while a pleated element holds it on the surface and is often washable.
