Where a 25 micron filter fits between coarse and fine

Twenty five microns sits between the coarse screens that catch sand and the fine cartridges that polish water, and that middle position is exactly why it is useful. It catches what damages equipment without blocking every few weeks, which makes it a sensible first cartridge on well water and a sensible only cartridge in a number of applications.

What it catches

Sand, grit, rust flakes, pipe scale and the larger part of the suspended load in most well water. That covers the material that scores pump impellers, jams appliance solenoids, wears valve seats and blinds finer cartridges. It passes fine silt and anything that makes water look faintly hazy, so it improves clarity without producing polished water, and it passes everything dissolved, so it has no effect on hardness, iron in solution, taste or safety.

Where it earns its place

As the first cartridge on well water, ahead of a finer element, where it takes the bulk of the load cheaply and makes the fine cartridge last several times longer. As the only cartridge where the purpose is protecting a pump, a heater or an irrigation system rather than producing clear water. And as a step down from a spin down screen in a staged train. It is also a sensible replacement rating for households changing a five micron cartridge far too often.

How to know it is the right choice

Look at what the current filter is doing. A five micron cartridge blocking within weeks is telling you the load is too heavy for that rating, and stepping up to twenty five for a first stage usually resolves it while the finer element behind carries on doing the polishing. Conversely, if a twenty five micron cartridge is coming out visibly clean after months, the water is cleaner than the rating assumes and there is no benefit in staging at all.

Reading the rating

As with any cartridge, check whether the rating is nominal, meaning most particles at that size are caught, or absolute, meaning essentially all are, since only absolute supports a specific claim. And check the construction, because a depth cartridge holds dirt through its thickness and fails gradually while a pleated element holds it on the surface and is often washable. Neither is better in general. Our whole house filter guide covers staging and sizing.

Questions people ask about 25 micron filter

Is 25 microns fine enough to be useful?

Yes, for protecting equipment and taking the bulk of a sediment load. It passes fine silt and anything dissolved.

When should I choose it over five microns?

When a five micron cartridge is blocking within weeks. Use 25 as a first stage and keep the finer element behind it.

Will it make water clearer?

Somewhat, but it will not polish. Fine haze passes through at this rating and needs a finer element.

Can it be the only filter?

Where the purpose is protecting a pump, heater or irrigation system rather than producing clear water, yes.
